Shoes and Glasses

Today our goal was to find the shoe shop to get Lillian a pair or shoes made so she doesn't have to put an insert in her shoe. We drove all over looking for this place. Terry said to look for a market that sold kitchen wares and the shoe market is near it. We found the kitchen wares but not the shoe shop. I even found the mink blankets my friend wants. There are big ones too. I think I'll be taking one home as well. I figure I should start early stuffing my suitcases to come home. Muriel saw the umbrellas and said she wants one of them. We told her we would make sure she got one.

Since we didn't find the shoe shop, we headed out for Inha Optical. We stopped for a bathroom break and were notified that the kids were all thirsty. Terry said to not use the vending machines and go across the street to the store. Lillian had a fit right there on the side walk. Arms flailing, feet stomping, her face red and she was spiting. Terry and I stood there, looked at Lillian and told her to either stop or get nothing at all. A fit is not going to get her a drink any faster. Very grudingly, Lillian stomped her way to the crosswalk. We made it across the street and while passing a street vender, Mikey smelled hot dogs. He saw the buns and started screaming "Dot dogs, momma! Dot dogs! I want a dot dog over there!" I told him NO and Terry asked him what is in a hot dog. He said "do you know they put real dogs in there? They even put their eyes in there. Do you want to get dog eyeballs, Mikey?" Of course, Mikey looked very confused. Every hot dog he has ever eaten tasted good, so why wouldn't these? Terry said if he really wanted one, he buy it. The girls only gasped and said "ooooo don't eat it Mikey." It was so hard to get that kid to keep walking away from the hot dogs! THEN in the store the fight was on over Hershey's chocolate milk drink. We told them to get apple, orange or grape juice but NOOO we had to fight over that too. We finally got everyone a juice and marched them outside to the sidewalk. Terry told them to stand in the shade and drink their juice since we are NOT having any spills in the store. Surprisingly, not a single one of them argued. I think they were too busy looking at the pink truck with all the pink glamore girly stuff on it.

We did finally make it to Inha Optical. My glasses have been falling apart for months and I resorted to super glueing the screws into the frames. I have a pair of sunglasses as well but they are an old prescription that I've been wearing for years. I figured it was time to get both replaced with something completely different. I'm very bad about being habitual with things so this time I vowed to not leave until I had something I've never seen or wore before. It took forever to pick the glass frames. I tried on about 50 pairs and came out with 2. My kids had a blast trying on all the spongebob frames. Mikey found a pair that were perfect but I'm not paying nearly $60 for a 3 year olds glasses that he'll only snap in half the first day or 2. It took about 2 hours to get everything done. And the price was awesome. 1 pair of glasses, 1 pair of sunglasses and the eye exam cost about 107,000 won which is around $100. I can't get that in Oklahoma! I'm tempted to get anothe pair made since my vision hasn't changed in years. I got the same prescription again. This makes the 3rd time so I don't think my eyes will change any time soon.

While we were shopping, Jessica had to prepare a final exam for her students. She needed some quiet time to do her work and let's face, my kids weren't in the quiet mode today! She told Terry it was shopping day and to take our time. It was fine with me because I didn't want to be stuck in the excerise park especially after having IPL done on my face. I have to avoid the sun and wear a ton of lotion and sunblock. We were only going to have a few hours out because Terry was supposed to have a class. But one of the teachers became ill and sounded terrible. Terry decided it was better to cancel class until after the cleaning lady came and cleaned the school. She comes around 9am so there's plenty of time for everything to be cleaned and dry before anyone comes. This will also reduce the likelyhood of passing on what ever the teacher has. We don't know what she has or if she is contagious. Either way I don't care. Everything needs scrubbed.

By the time we came home, Jessica had dinner ready and my kids were rushing the table to get a chair. We had to herd them like cattle to the bathroom to wash up. They ate beans, rice and cornbread with orange kool aid. Yes, I brought kool aid. You know american children would die if they didn't have soda or kool aid. Would you believe Mikey ate cornbread after his bath? That child has eaten 3 or 4 pieces of cornbread. He also made a stinky in the upstairs bathroom that was so bad that Jessica flushed the toilet while he was on it. We were all surprised such a horific package could come from child that small!

Jessica and Terry went to the store during bath time so they could escape without one of the kids begging to go. All of them were fast asleep upon their return. YEAH!

Day trip to Seoul

We left around 10 am and got home about 9pm. Traffic is really bad on saturdays. There's 5 lanes of traffic and people literally squeeze in. There's not room to merge between cars, you force your way in! Plus, you better know where your turn is or you'll be missing it. The traffic would be backed up for a mile at the exit. By the time Terry and Jessica realized the turn was ahead of us, it was too late to get in line.

Our first stop was to the dentist. He had fun with Lillian. She asked him to check her teeth too. Muriel showed off her loose tooth and Mikey told him NO NO NO. I got a cleaning and then a laser treatment for help with the sensitivity problem along my gum line. Although, the zap on my tongue is a bit tender. I'm not sure if he deadened the nerves or what but I don't hurt anymore. AND I didn't have any cavities or loose fillings. Jessica and Terry got their teeth cleaned as well. Then off we went to get lunch. We ate Sam Gye Tang which is boiled chicken with rice, onions and ju ju be. Basically, it's chicken soup with the bird left whole or cut in half. They give you these chili peppers that were horridly hot. I didn't eat get close to them. Terry ate one and he let out a wow. Even he said they were hot. The garlic grass in chili sause was good and it was even better in the soup. Lillian wasn't feeling too hungry because she didn't eat enough dinner and took her medicine so she was looking at her food but not eating it. We finally told her she could have chocolate if she ate her food. That was all it took. She ate most of her bowl in a few minutes flat. Muriel was determined to eat with chop sticks and had a few "water boy" screams while trying to get it right. She finally did and managed to get food in her mouth with the chop sticks. Mikey of course, proved me wrong again. I told Jessica and Terry that the kids could share half a chicken. Mikey rarely eats chicken unless it's a nugget. So, to our surprise he ate nearly the entire half chicken! We had to order an addition chicken because Mikey wanted more and Muriel finished her's off then started looking for more as well. Either they were really hungry or it tasted really good.

We had to drive to the dermatologist after lunch. Several ladies come together after hours to get "work" done. If they want botox, they can split a bottle and 2 or 3 of them can get it done for less than one person would be charged. We all had laser treatments. I got IPL which feels like a 9 volt battery shooting ligtening all over your face with the occasional 12 volt surge. Plus, it's like a lightening show with your eyes closed. Jessica and the other ladies got fraxel. They all looked sunburned afterward and Muriel asked one of them what happened to her. This lady told Muriel that you go back there and stick you head in this box and it blasts your whole head. It turns your face red but you're pretty later. Don't know if she believes her or not. All she knows is we have gooey stuff on our faces. All of us have lotion galore and tons of sunscreen smeared all over our faces and necks.

On our way out, we stopped to watch a guy put fresh sea life in his tank for people to pick out their dinner. There was squid in there and Muriel identified it right off. She was looking at them and told us they were all baby squid. THEN the fellow grabbed sea sponges and made them "pee" on the kids. They all squealed and giggled. This completed our day and we headed back home. Jessica put in the Blue Men cd for the kids to watch and do the motions.

Once home we got everyone ready for bed. Mikey put on his bedtime pants which were boy pants. The other day, he had to wear "magic panties" (that's what the Koreans call them) and they were pink. He kept telling me "I'm NOT a girl!" He told Muriel's a girl, Lillian's a girl, I'm NOT a girl!

Early mornings

Okay, my kids get up so early that even the neighbor is complaining. They all crash between 8 and 8:30pm. They get up around 5am and start playing then beg for breakfast. I usually have breakfast on the table by 6am since getting them under control that early can be a challenge.

Around 7am we head out of the house so everyone can get a little more sleep. We go walking around the villa and head down to the exercise park. The kids run around and work out with me. I've already dropped a few pounds too. Lillian is building some "serious" muscle. Mikey is having all sorts of fun throwing pine cones every where and using sticks to pick up things he shouldn't. I told him he couldn't touch cigarette butts or bottle caps etc so he uses sticks to examine them. He also likes kicking the piles of tree flowers/seeds that the street worker have worked so hard to sweep up. Muriel has enjoyed seeing shells in the cement and the "homeless" dogs are amusing. She says they are DIRTY dogs. She has yet to see a cat. The kids are always saying hi, hello or good morning to people on the streets. We get some interesting looks as we wander down the streets with the kids looking at the fish, crabs and other sea life in the restaurant windows. People sometimes stop to watch the kids and often talk to them. It's only a few words but the kids enjoy it. Mikey is getting a lot of attention which he is soaking up. He knows he's "special" and cute so he uses it to his advantage. The girls have yet to figure out why Mikey is getting so much attention. For once, it's not them getting all the attention.

Another day in Incheon

We are off to Seoul today. I have a dentist appointment and it's ladies day at the skin doctor. So, maybe I'll get a laser treatment while I'm there. Plus, I cut my finger and I might have the doctor take a look at it to see what his opinion is. I probably need a stitch to make it stop bleeding but band aides work just as well and are cheaper. I seriously considered using super glue but it really stings. I cut my finger using a cutco knife while slicing an orange. I do okay until after 5pm then I just don't have any energy left. I also get clumsy when I'm tired.

I'm wondering if I should take my pain pill now or take them with me. First off, I've been working out at the exercise park. There's equipment there so you can surf, twist, ski, elliptical machine or do the spinning wheels. I also believe it is going to rain. My knee is so bad I can hardly climb the stairs. AND there's a lot of stairs here. Just to get to Jessica's house you have to go down a flight of steep stairs, then down a few stone steps THEN up a horrible steep set of porch steps. By the time you make it in the house, you have to sit down and rest.

Arrival

Our flight was LONG! We had to get up at 2am in order to get to the airport to check in and catch our 7:15 am flight. My mom and my husband held back their tears until we made it past the security check point. I managed to keep my children together by tying a shoe lace to each of their wrists which was attached to my belt loop. We got several looks and a lot of snickers BUT at least my kids were with me. All of them did just fine in the airports as well as on the planes. They had a lot of fun looking out the windows.

We took 3 airplanes:
OKC to Dallas Ft. Worth: 35 minutes
Dallas Ft. Worth to Japan (Boeing 777): 13 hours
Japan to Incheon Korea: 2 hours

Total trip with lay overs: 23 hours 35 minutes

By the time I was able to call home, it was 8 am in Oklahoma. My husband had not heard from me in over 24 hours and was worried sick.

The kids found it amazing that we were above the clouds in the airplane. Lillian kept asking how come she couldn't feel the plane going fast. And they wanted to know where their special beds were. We took pictures over Alaska and the Bearing straight. We could see ships and snow capped mountains. Mikey kept giving people updates about what he saw out the windows. He would tell the closest person we were still over water or he only saw clouds. It was really cute.

I knew the bathroom would be a problem for Muriel. She started to feel ill because she refused to use it. I finally had to MAKE her go into the bathroom and not leave until she went. I promised to flush the toilet once she was safely out the door. Mikey on the other hand, thought the sink was the coolest thing ever and had to pee every 20 minutes just so he could play in the sink! Lillian could get into the bathroom but then she couldn't get out. So, she would go into a panic attack. I had to get a steward to let her out on one occasion because I had food on my tray and dealing with Mikey. THEN Lillian shut Mikey's leg in the bathroom door and once again I couldn't get up so a stewardess had to rush to get Mikey out because Lillian kept pushing the door closed.

On our last flight, we encountered a lot of turbulance. All three kids yelled "what was that?" while holding onto their drinks and food trays. They could barely eat and drink without loosing it. Mikey decided to lick the red pepper paste that came with his food even though I kept telling him it was hot. I think he was so jet lagged at that point he couldn't taste much. Muriel was looking at me really confused during this and kept saying she couldn't hear me. Of course she couldn't hear me. She had head phones on! The lady behind her kept laughing at the kids. I guess it was cheap entertainment for the people around us. Lillian started talking with the young man behind me and wore his sunglasses and just chatted away. Mikey also fell asleep with his legs hanging off the seat during the approach to Incheon Korea. The stewardess had already sat him up once then had to sit him up and secure him in his seat quickly before we landed.

Lillian ran to Jessica and hugged her when she found her. Mikey and Muriel hid behind me smiling shyly. Jessica took one cart of luggage and I took the other because one of the airport employees took pity on me and pushed the cart out to Jessica. I was very thankful too. We even got everything into the car. I had 4 suitcases, 4 boxes, 1 carry on (a bag on wheels) and my giant purse.

One the way "home" all three kids looked out the windows of the car. They said they liked the brights lights of the signs but the beach was really dirty. They are having a lot of fun just looking around them. Everything is different and new.

We went to Inha University today and waited for Terry to bring the car to get us while Jessica headed off to work. While we wandered around the pond, a group of ladies saw Mikey and started "making" over him. All I heard was this oh sound and a bunch of chattering. Then Mikey started running all over to get away from them. They grabbed him and kissed him then tossled his hair. Mikey of course giggled and ran behind me. Lillian and Muriel got to shake their hands while they looked them over as well. It was interesting that I could understand they were asking if all 3 were my children. AND there was one professor that took one look at Mikey and said he could see Jessica in him.

Terry took us to the Tae Kwan Doe school today as well. Lillian and Mikey had lots of fun playing while Muriel stood against the wall sulking. She even started crying. The instructors wife hugged her and talked to her. Muriel has said she doesn't want to take lessons. That's what she said about swimming lessons THEN she decided to she wanted to take the class after it was too late to get in. So, this time we signed her up whether she liked it or not. I told her to go have fun. This was a great opportunity and she would get to go back home and tell her friends she got to take Tae Kwan Doe lessons from a Korean. I'm sure she will liven up after a lesson or two. She's just not too sure of her surroundings yet.

We are at Jessica and Terry's school now. The girls are playing "guess who" while Mikey makes Mr. Potato head look like he's mutated. They have all sorts of games and books to read. The youngest of the students will be arriving soon. We will be going back "home" later. I'll be cooking dinner since Jessica won't get home until after 8pm. I'll post again when I have a chance.

Here are my children on Halloween 2008: Mikey the donkey, Muriel- Tinker Bell's friend and Lillian the VERY HUNGRY Caterpillar.
They have a lot of fun dressing up. All of them are begging to take their traditional Korean clothes with them on our trip (I don't think we have room to pack them). We have let them wear their outfits on special occasions- including to go out to eat. We got some really strange looks from the Japanese ladies when they realized the girl's dresses weren't kimonos at the Japanese restaurant. They were cute though.

Preparing to leave

My three children (ages 8, 6, 3) and I are taking a trip to my sister's (Jessica). This trip has taken a year to plan, prepare and pay for. My sister and her husband (Terry) live in South Korea which is many miles away from Oklahoma. The packing is the hardest. My sister has sent me a list of items she or her friends would like me to bring. This includes over 90 pounds of easy reader books for my sister's English academy. I've already packed one box of gluten free groceries plus cornmeal, flour, spices, and gatorade. Suitcase #1 is packed full of books and barely weighs under 50 pounds. Suitcase #2 also full of books but I haven't weighed it yet. Suitcase #3 has 2 muffin tins + liners, gluten free snacks and cereal, flip flops, educational materials and all that other stuff we can't live without. AND I am not done packing! I took our clothes out of a suitcase in order to put other items in it. I dug out my biggest bag and a client gave me a bag with wheels, so I'm hoping these will be enough to hold the clothing and the last few items. I didn't even pack very many clothes- honestly. I did put all the games in the carry on bag so the kids have plenty to do. I also threw in the ear protectors for my oldest so she doesn't freak out over the plane engine (she has extremely sensitive hearing).

My children are excited they finally get to see their Aunt Jessica and Uncle Terry's house. They also want to see the ocean and dig for clams, snails and anything else they can catch. I think they will enjoy eating new foods BUT wiggly squiggly octopus isn't their idea of yummy. My oldest daughter is convinced Koreans eat chow mein kitty which everyone laughs over when she tells them about it. My brother in-law also found a Tae Kwan Doe school for my children to attend. It's only a few minutes from their English academy. My children have been planning to take Tae Kwan Doe classes since last summer when Jessica came to visit.

The count down has begun for our departure. The panic is also setting in. My husband's hair is falling out in patches because he is stressed out about us going. He is staying home since he has to work. I keep reassuring him everything will be okay. I am used to taking our children where ever I go so, this trip will not drive me crazy. PLUS, there's passenger assistance which I plan on taking full advantage of. Those people are there for a reason and I've got 3 reasons to use them.
