We're going to the market, we're going on a trip....okay so today was just straight up STINKY! Ever thought the fish counter smelled bad? This gives a whole new meaning to smelling bad! The first fish market was nothing but places to eat and you picked out your fresh fish as you came into to sit down. We even saw sharks there.
The next market we went to was a building full of tanks downstairs and they cooked it upstairs. Cool to walk thru and got lots of nice pictures. It was especially fun to hear the kids scream when the people picked up the king crabs, blue lobsters and really ungly fish. We saw lots of baby octopus trying to escape too. Had to look out for the clams, they spit water!
The last market was the one we were searching for. It's an open market selling nothing but seafood items from fresh to frozen to dried. The smell is horrible and that is putting it nicely. You can smell the fish before you get there! And Lillian only thought tuna stunk! She finally told Jessica she was getting used to the smell. Muriel on the other hand, said she thought she was gonna throw up. Mikey was eye level to ALL the tables so he got a great view of everything. He never complained about the smell though. Terry carried Mikey around most of the time. I couldn't, I feel down in the kitchen this morning! Terry basically pledged the floors. He told the children to "be careful, the floor is slippery." I stepped up into the kitchen on the whole 2 inch step AND slide across the floor. Terry just laughed and laughed. Everyone else wanted to know what happened. I jarred my hip and lower back so badly that I hurt all day. I fell with my left leg under me and nearly did the splits! All I can say is that Advil ain't even touching this pain. This is the pain where you knock a few back and take prescription pain pills with!
We bought an assortment of clams and snails(20,000 for 3 kilos), jumbo and I do mean jumbo shrimp (16,000 for one kilo), squid (6,000 won for 4) and finally FRESH red snapper (40,000 won). Lillian got to watch the live red snapper get whacked in the head and cleaned. It flopped all over and threw gross water every where. The guy selling us the fish started asking questions when he saw Lillian giggling at the fish flopping. I took pictures so those will be posted soon.
Once home, the kids were stuffed into the bath while Jessica and Terry got the BBQ grill going. Terry threw the clams, snails and shrimp on first. Then we tossed on the red snapper. The kids sat on the front porch steps eating clams, snails and shrimp. We forgot to buy more ketchup so I couldn't make shrimp sauce! I made garlic butter and cut lemon wedges instead. It was good, really good! The red snapper was the best I've ever eaten and I think Muriel would agree. She pigged out on it. Even Mikey ate clams. Lillian went "to town" as well. I even gave them korean cider which is like sprite. After eating til they nearly exploded, we made them wash up and change clothes. Trust me they had to change! Terry and I cleaned up the front porch steps while Jessica washed the few dishes we had.
We didn't dare eat all that seafood in the house. First of all, it stinks up the house. Second of all, the cleaning lady would probably quit upon sight of the finger prints and all the other grossness the kids left behind. At least all Terry had to do was pour water down the porch steps to clean it off. But it was soooo good!
